Hanseatic and Bremen: Up-Close Voyages Through Pristine Alaska

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers two expedition trips through Alaska in the Summer of 2012 and Summer of 2013 on board the MS Hanseatic and MS Bremen. The  184-guest Hanseatic , the world’s only 5-star expedition ship and the 4-star 164-guest Bremen (Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships), were created to provide intensive exploration in the most elegant surroundings for only a small number of passengers.

The Summer of 2012: Hanseatic sets sail in July through the legendary Inside Passage of Alaska, considered one of the most beautiful waterwayes in the world. Guests can book the following excursions : a glacier flight, a dogsled trip, a boat trip and hike in the rainforest, a helicopter flight over the glaciers and a ride with the historic White Pass & Yukon Route narrow gauge railway. Guests will encounter Tracy Arm, perhaps Alaska’s most beautiful fjord, with fabulous views of her steep rock walls. Hanseatic will also travel through the Kingdom of Bears and Bald Eagles, where guests may be able to catch sight of whales and sea lions in an impressive natural setting. Additionally, an excursion to Tongass National Park will offer guests insight into the flora and fauna of the largest national park in the US.

Voyage Details: From July 14-20, 2012, from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver BC, fares for this itinerary start at £4,700 per person.

The Summer of 2013: Bremen set sails for Alaska in June 2013, with a shorter trip through the Inside Passage, highlighting more of the Alaskan islands along the route. Guests will be able to observe colonies of fur seals, while kittiwakes and guillemots circle the seemingly endless sky over the solitary waters on this itinerary. Guests may also catch a glimpse of the impressive bald eagle along the route. An optional excursion to Dutch Harbour is also offered, where passengers can visit the oldest Russian Orthodox church in North America. The Bremen will get close to the wonders of Alaska, in Amalik and Kukak Bays, where powerful brown bears hunt for food. An overwhelming world of ice awaits guests in front of the still active Hubbard Glacier, as well as magnificent landscape views and whale spotting when Bremen sails through the Inian Pass. This voyage concludes with two days through British Columbia’s Inside Passage.

Voyage Details: From June 19-July 7, 2013, from Nome, Alaska, to Vancouver BC, fares for this itinerary start at £5,710 per person.

Expedition Travel At Its Best:

Both ships are well equipped for travel in difficult waters, holding the highest ice class ranking for passenger vessels (E4). Also shallow drafts and high manoeuvrability allow the ships to enter waters larger cruise vessels cannot reach. Guests explore the world’s best-kept secrets in zodiacs (small motorized boats) with only 10-12 guests. On-board experts include a team of experienced scientists, expedition leaders and specialists who guide landings and offer guests the rare opportunity to observe plant and animal life up close. The captains guiding the vessels have together already travelled to the Arctic and Antarctica more than 200 times.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ Columbus 2 Sets Out On Her Maiden Voyage

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises new 698-berth Columbus 2 was christened in Palma today by Carmen Riu Güell, chair of Riu Hotels and Resorts. Oceania’s former Insignia, she has been taken by Hapag-Loyd on a two-year charter with option for a third year.

Tonight, she sets out on her maiden voyage, a 12-night cruise that will include Formentera, Barcelona, Ibiza, Menorca, Monte Carlo, Corsica, Civitavecchia for Rome, Sardinia and Sicily before finishing in Valletta, Malta.

As she will operate in the German-speaking market only, there will be no International Hostess as there is on other ships in the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet.

Compared to the 420-berth Columbus, which she replaces, Columbus 2 has a passenger space ratio of 43.4 gross tons per passenger, as compared to 36.3 on Columbus. On average, Columbus 2 also has a third more cabin space, at 200 sq ft compared to 150 sq ft on Columbus.

Columbus 2 offers two-thirds veranda cabins compared to just two on the Columbus, and has only 8% inside cabins compared to 31% on Columbus, so this will be a big advance for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ premium German product.

For dining, Columbus 2 offers a choice of three restaurants, the main Albert Ballin Restaurant, plus two alternative restaurants, the Polo Grill steakhouse and Toscana Italian restaurant, the latter two at no extrra expense but requiring reservations.

In addition, the ship’s Lido restaurant opens for breakfast. lunch and dinner.

In order to widen the market for the new ship, a number of specially-designated family cruises will be offered, carrying children up to age 15 free of charge when travelling with two adults in the same cabin.

On all other cruises, children up to 11 will be carried free and those between 12 and 15 will be charged just €25 (about $35) per night. In aid of this, two children’s rooms, one for kids and one from teenagers, have been installed on deck 9.

In terms of the other changes, the biggest is that the casino has been completely removed and replaced by a new lounge and bar called Martinis.  Slot machines have been replaced by leather-look banquettes for seating and the roulette and blackjack tables have been replaced by a dance floor, where music is supplied after dark by a resident DJ.

Elsewhere, the library at the top of the ship is now stocked with German-language books, television channels are all German and new Continental-style individual duvets have been added to the beds.

As the Columbus 2 comes into service, preparations are meanwhile being made for the Columbus to be delivered next month to Plantours & Partner of Bremen, who will operate her as the ms Hamburg.

Hapag-Lloyd’s Europa 2, A Truly International Ship, Seems To Find Some of her Roots in the Empress of Britain of 1931

The Elements Asian Restaurant on board Europa 2

The Cathay Lounge on board the Empress of Britain of 1931

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ new Europa 2 may well prove to be one of the most interestingly decorated ships since the Empress of Britain of 1931 and Normandie of 1935. But to keep things in a modern tone, Sebastian Ahrens, managing director of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises said, “We are breaking new ground with Europa 2. She will represent a modern and casual interpretation of luxury cruises in terms of her architecture, her restaurants and her entertainment programme.  Europa 2 will offer an international atmosphere for sophisticated, cosmopolitan customers who still have very demanding professional lives and are looking for the greatest possible degree of individuality in their spare time. We have therefore consciously decided to do without cruise traditions such as the Captain’s Dinner.”

“The ship will be positioned internationally.  English-speaking guests will feel comfortable on every cruise on Europa 2. Most of the entertainment on board does not rely on language. The on-board announcements will be reduced to a minimum and made in German and English at all times,” added Ahrens.

Flexibility and individuality will be found in every detail from entertainment to gourmet cuisine on board Europa 2. The routes of Europa 2 will be geared towards working people and families, with one-week itineraries offered. Personalized service will be heightened, with more than 370 staff members for a maximum of 516 guests, as well as butler and travel concierge services offering unsurpassed quality when it comes to catering to guests’ needs. New standards will also be set with regards to environmental protection - Europa 2 will be the first cruise ship equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction, which reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides by almost 95 percent.

Shorter Routes, Ideal for Working People and Families

With 7-day combinable cruises to the Mediterranean in the summer and 13-20 day combination cruises to far-away destinations in the winter, Europa 2 will meet the requirements of working people and families with limited holiday time. The ship will call at 123 ports on 26 different itineraries in 2013. Cruises will take guests to the western and eastern Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula, as well as Southeast Asia. The size of the ship is a major advantage – with a length of 739 feet and a draught of 20.7 feet, Europa 2 is capable of calling at small, rarely-visited ports such as Bonifacio and Portofino, which is not an option for larger ships. Furthermore, a total of twelve Zodiacs will be carried to take passengers to lagoons and beaches  in remote parts of Southeast Asia where ships can’t dock.

Accommodations On-board, All-Suites

Europa 2 will exclusively offer Veranda Suites with balconies each measuring at least 75 square feet facing the sea, a novelty in the cruise market. In addition, all suites will have a free of charge mini bar, Wi-Fi Internet access (at a charge) and a tablet PC. The 251 suites in seven different categories will measure in size from 301 to 1,066 square feet and will offer their own whirlpools with ocean view in the highest categories. In addition, 16 Spa Suites will have whirlpool tubs and rain showers with steam saunas, providing guests with a private oasis of well-being onboard. For families traveling together, there will be seven family-style suites where parents and children can live in two separate areas, connected by a door and the shared balcony.

Culinary Diversity with Flexible Times and Open Seating

The restaurant concept on board Europa 2will be synonymous with diversity and flexibility – flexible mealtimes, no assigned seating, and plenty of tables for two. There will be eight restaurants to choose from among them, three speciality restaurants with Mediterranean, French and Asian cuisine, as well as a Sushi Bar. The Asian restaurant Elements provides an interesting comparison with Canadian Pacific’s Empress of Britain of 1931, which as the time was advertised in Germany as “das Luxusschiff der Welt” (“The Most Luxurious Ship in the World”). One of the Empress of Britain‘s chief attractions was the Chinoiserie used in her decorations, particularly in her Cathay Lounge, something that stemmed from Canadian Pacific’s Transpacific ocean liner service between Vancouver and the Orient. This is interesting as it was Hapag-Lloyd that took over CP Ships, the former Canadian Pacific Steamships, in 2005.

The Tarragon French restauramt on board Europa 2. No extra charge to dine here.

All restaurants will be included in the cruise price (excluding beverages). On special occasions, guests can book the private dining room, allowing them to dine in a very personal atmosphere. There will also be an on-board cooking school, equipped by Miele, where professional chefs will provide guests with unique insights. In addition to the eight restaurants, six bars are to be found on-board.

Entertainment with Exclusive Productions & Performances

The entertainment programme will reflect the modern concept Europa 2. The theatre will have modern stage technology and a large LED wall extending across two stories – a novelty on a relatively small ship. For the first time for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, the entertainment programme will feature spectacular productions, performances and light shows. The shows will have no adaptation of shore programs, but instead will be exclusively performed aboard Europa 2. Two different shows per week will be offered, ensuring plenty of variety. Passengers who spend 14 days onboard will see four different shows. International guest artists will further enhance the entertainment program. Many shows do not start simultaneously, allowing guests to enjoy more than one show nightly.

Wellness and Fitness: 1,000 Square Metres/ 10,000 Square Foot Spa

Guests will also find diversity and plenty of space in the wellness area of Europa 2, which will boast 1,000 square metres/ 10,000 square feet. Treatments ranging from massages, to facials, to Thalasso therapy will be offered in the eight treatment rooms at the Ocean Spa. The extensive sauna landscape grants every guest more space to relax than any other ship of this class. In addition, passengers can book a Personal Spa experience and enjoy the private sauna and whirlpool facilities, as well as massage beds and comfortable relaxation furnishings, by the hour or the day, in an intimate atmosphere. The on-board facilities also include a large fitness area with fitness and cardio equipment, as well as a room where Pilates and Spinning will take place. Upon request, a Personal Trainer is available to counsel guests on their workout, and sports hosts are available to organise shore excursions, for example, bicycle tours or Nordic Walking.

Child Care Available For Toddlers Two And Older

Young cruise passengers are sure to enjoy themselves in the Kids and Teens Club, compiled by qualified child care specialists. For the first time in the German market, child care will now be available for toddlers two and older on board Europa 2 (subject to charge). There will be a special area for the infants called the “Knopf Club,” equipped with cots, changing tables and a lounge furnished with cuddly toys, by the renowned manufacturer Steiff. Steiff is a German-based plush toy company known for its high quality for over 100 years. Children aged 4-10 years old play in the adjacent Kids Club, and children 11-15 years old meet in the Teens Club, where table football, video game consoles, or the disco will await them. Children eleven and under will travel free of charge on board Europa 2, when accompanied by two full-price cruise guests. Shore excursions for children, teenagers, or the entire family are offered on all family cruises.

Keel-Laying Takes Place Today for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ New Europa 2

The next construction stage of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ Europa 2 began with her keel laying today at the STX Europe shipyard in St Nazaire, France, with the lowering into the dry dock of new ship’s first block. Sebastian Ahrens, managing director of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Laurent Castaing, general manager of STX France, each placed a coin on the block. The coins were welded into the block and will accompany the ship on all her future voyages. This tradition is believed to bring good luck to new ships. The first block has a length of 11.8 metres and is 8.6 metres high and weighs 400 tonnes.

Concurrent with the start of construction in the dry dock, thenew ship’s  suites are being manufactured in the shipyard’s cabin factory. Then, at the beginning of July, the Europa 2 will take to the water for the first time so that work on her interior can be initiated at the outfitting pier. A total of 835 shipyard workers are involved in the construction of the new ship. Until  delivery in the spring of 2013 the shipyard workers will dedicate over 2.5 million hours of labour to the project.

MS Europa: Simply the Best! (“The Sunday Times” 29.01.12)

When cruising’s most feared critic, Douglas Ward, recently awarded the title of best ship in the world to the Europa, it didn’t make any headlines. Why? Because it’s the 12th time he’s done it. In 12 years. “I know it’s boring, but it’s simply unmatched,” Ward says. He’s right. It’s all in the detail: the cuisine is outstanding (there’s even a restaurant from the superchef Dieter Müller), the service is attentive (they’ll spray you with Evian to keep you cool by the pool), the decor tasteful and the ambience supremely civilised. And it isn’t even that expensive. A six-day cruise from Nice to Malta, departing on May 20, starts at £1,930, full board, through Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. EasyJet flies to both Nice and Malta.

Meet Classical Music Stars On Board MS Europa’s Music Cruises: The Ocean Sun and Stella Maris Festivals 2012

The highest -ranked cruise ship in the world, according to the 2012 Berlitz Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ MS Europa is offering guests two world-class music festivals in 2012.

The “Ocean Sun Festival,” the only classical music festival on the High Seas, will feature internationally acclaimed classical music stars performing on board, as well as exclusive concerts at historical sites ashore.

Additionally, the “Stella Maris“ International Vocal Competition will bring together up-and-coming young singers from the most renowned opera houses in the world to perform and compete on board a Middle East and Africa itinerary.

These two music cruises are the highlights of a total of nine music cruises aboard the Europa in 2012.

Now in its sixth year, the “Ocean Sun Festival” has been compared to the prestigious Festival del Sole in Napa Valley, California and the Tuscan Sun Festival in Italy. For an added dimension to this musical experience, international music critics will offer lectures along the route. On board, “Ocean Sun Festival” guests will experience the breathtaking violinist Janine Jansen, the aspiring pianist Igor Levit and renowned soprano vocalist Marlis Petersen. This musical voyage continues ashore with the soloists joining the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Bergen, Norway. While the classical music concerts are the highlights of this itinerary, the Europa will glide through the picturesque Norwegian fjords, with calls in the charming and multifaceted cities of Bergen and Oslo. This 12-day itinerary from August 12-24, 2012, starts at £3,890 per person/based on double occupancy for a suite.

In cooperation with the prestigious international opera houses, the Europa will also be hosting her fourth annual classical music competition at sea, “Stella Maris.” Under the direction of Canadian tenor Michael Schade, a jury of famous personalities in the classical music field will judge the top talent represented by international opera houses. The distinguishing feature of “Stella Maris” is that the audience determines the winner of the cash prize worth €15,000. This prize, generous compared to others in the world of classical music, is provided by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. The jury will decide on the recipients of the additional prizes, which include: a guest engagement at an international opera house, a concert, and a test recording with Deutsche Grammophon. The competition will occur on board an 18-day Middle Eastern and Africa cruise through the Indian Ocean from November 7-25, 2012, making stops in Dubai, Oman, the Seychelles and Madagascar this November. The itinerary starts at £5,340 per person, based on double occupancy for a suite.

The Europa is the first “all-suites” cruise ship, with staterooms that are never less than 27 square meters / 290 square feet, 80% of them having their own veranda, assuring privacy and relaxation. The Europa offers guests the largest space per passenger, as well as one of the highest staff passenger ratios, with 280 staff members for a maximum of 408 guests. New to the Europa , Dieter Müller became the first award-winning chef to open his own gourmet restaurant onboard. He’s personally on board 70 days a year. Also recently launched, the Europa ’s “Baby Welcome Package” offering baby care products and baby food for passengers travelling with infants. The Europa will be visiting over twenty countries in 2012, as part of her international itineraries, where both English and German are used on board.
